  4. Country Description:  Portugal is a moderately developed and stable
  5. democracy.  Tourist facilities are widely available.
  6.  
  7. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  A visa is not required for
  8. tourist stays up to sixty days.  For further information concerning entry
  9. requirements for Portugal, travelers can contact the Embassy of Portugal at
  10. 2125 Kalorama Road N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, tel: (202) 328-8610, or the
  11. nearest Portuguese Consulate in Boston, New Bedford, Providence, New York,
  12. Newark, or San Francisco.

  14. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities are available.  Doctors and
  15. hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health services.  U.S.
  16. medical insurance is not always valid outside the United States.  Travelers
  17. have found that in some cases, supplemental medical insurance with specific
  18. overseas coverage has proved to be useful.  Information on specific health
  19. matters is available through the Centers for Disease Control's international
  20. travelers hotline at (404) 332-4559.

  22. Crime Information:  Portugal has a low but increasing rate of violent crime.
  23.  Travelers, especially those who appear to be affluent, may become targets
  24. of pickpockets and purse snatchers.  Automobile break-ins, particularly from
  25. rental cars, and car thefts are common.  The loss or theft abroad of a U.S.
  26. passport should be reported immediately to the local police and the nearest
  27. U.S. embassy or consulate.  U.S. citizens can refer to the Department of
  28. State's pamphlet "A Safe Trip Abroad" for ways to promote a more trouble-
  29. free journey.  The pamphlet is available from the Superintendent of
  30. Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  32. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  33. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use, and dealing in
  34. illegal drugs are high.  Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and
  35. heavy fines.

  37. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register in the Consular Section of the
  38. U.S. Embassy or Consulate can obtain updated information on travel and
  39. security within Portugal.

  41. Embassy and Consulate Locations:  The U.S. Embassy in Portugal is located on
  42. Avenida das Forcas Armadas in Lisbon; telephone (351-1) 726-6600, 726-6659,
  43. 726-8670, or 726-8880.  A Consulate is located in the Azores, on the island
  44. of San Miguel, in Ponta Delgada.  The address is Avenida D. Henrique, tel:
  45. (351-96) 22216/7/8/9.  There is also a Consular Agency located in Funchal,
  46. Madeira, on Avenida Luis de Camoes, telephone (351-091) 743-429.  It is open
  47. from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
